Manufacturer ParaType, Inc
Description Designed in 1991-93 by Eric Spiekermann. Based on the typeface comissioned by the German Post Office (Bundespost) in 1984 as an exclusive corporate font. However the face was not accepted by the customer and the hole project was cancelled. In 1989 its artwork was digitized and the new face of 3 styles were created by Just van Rossum. It was named FF Meta after Meta Studio in which the new typeface was used exclusively. Then FontShop became to distribute FF Meta and some extra weights together with corresponding italics and small caps were added by Luk(as) de Groot. The face is very popular, especially in the US where it has been used for the setting of ID magazine, the leading publication for industrial and communication design. Meta has been hailed as "the typeface for the nineties"; young designers seem to appreciate its rugged charm, which owes alot to the detailed requirements of small type on bad paper. Cyrillic versions developed for ParaType in 2000 by Tagir Safayev and Olga Chayeva.
